Some days, the light just shows up for you. The sun was already high when I arrived at the field behind Sue Taylor’s home, a wide, open space with a clear view of sheep in the distance and one friendly goat who seemed determined to be part of the guest list. It was warm in an unmistakably Guernsey way, and I wasn’t the only one trying to find the best patch of shade.

The couple had already tied the knot in America, but the ceremony didn’t feel secondary. Quite the opposite. This was their Guernsey celebration: a day set aside just for family and friends who hadn’t been there for the original vows, but who were just as much a part of the story. And if there was any question of whether the moment would carry the same emotional weight, it was answered quickly, somewhere between the first quiet tears during the ceremony and the big, warm laughter that followed.

There was a kind of looseness to the day that made everything feel natural and unforced. People weren’t performing the idea of a wedding, they were just present, in the best sense of the word. The ceremony took place right at the edge of the field, with that gently curious livestock presence in the background, and the sense that this was exactly the right kind of setting for something so personal and sincere.

Later, the marquee filled with the kind of energy that only comes from real joy. City Limits played all the favourites, and the dancing started early, unselfconscious, full of movement, and impossible not to smile at. You could feel the difference it made, being outdoors, with that open sky and the day stretching out around everyone. It gave the celebration room to breathe.

From a photographer’s perspective, these are the moments you hope for, not because everything is perfectly styled or choreographed, but because you’re surrounded by people who are genuinely happy to be there. The emotion was easy to see and even easier to capture. It was in the hugs, the speeches, the quiet glances between the couple. Every photo felt like a small piece of something real.

By the time the sun softened and the light turned golden, the goat had settled down and the band was winding up their final set. What stayed behind was the feeling that this wasn’t just a celebration of a marriage, it was a celebration of everyone who helped shape it.

Photographing days like this is a privilege. They remind you that the best parts of a wedding aren’t always about the ceremony itself, but the people who show up to share it.
