Photographing Beth & Tom’s Guernsey Wedding
There’s something quietly nerve-wracking about being asked to photograph a wedding by someone who once taught you everything you know about photography. It felt like being handed the conductor's baton by the music teacher who once handed you a triangle. My old tutor, a close family friend of the couple, reached out because this wedding meant a lot to him. Which meant the pressure was on to do it right.

The day started in familiar Guernsey fashion: the skies going through all four moods before breakfast. Tom got ready at Beth’s dad’s house opposite Grandes Rocques—his groomsmen ironing shirts, adjusting ties, and embracing the mild chaos to a Dolly Parton soundtrack. Honestly, the vibe was immaculate.

Meanwhile, at the Imperial Hotel, Beth was getting ready in a light-filled self-catering suite. The energy was calm, steady, and full of laughter—with the occasional strategic sip of bubbles to keep things on pace.

The ceremony location was still undecided by mid-morning. Beach or hotel? The weather wasn’t saying. Eventually, Guernsey offered us a break in the clouds, and by midday we were down on the sand at The Gully, setting up between patches of blue sky and nervous optimism.

Beth and Tom said their vows with their feet in the sand and the wind in their hair. It wasn’t postcard-perfect, but it was real and quietly beautiful. We got through the group shots just in time—because as soon as the couple climbed into their TukTuk, the heavens opened. Good timing or divine planning—either way, we’ll take it.

Back at the Imperial, the afternoon unfolded in its own rhythm: tapas, welcome drinks, speeches filled with warmth, tears, and just the right amount of lovingly delivered mockery. The sun made enough of an appearance to tempt everyone outside, turning the terrace into a mini festival. No piñatas (despite persistent rumours), but the couple’s friends took turns behind the decks, curating a soundtrack that felt like a personalised mixtape. Dance floors are always better when the DJ actually knows who’s dancing.

Before sunset, we slipped away for a short couple shoot—just the three of us, the beach, and that quiet space between the noise. These are the moments I love to photograph most: not posed, not planned. Just natural, thoughtful stillness before the final wave of celebration.

As a Guernsey wedding photographer, this one had all the right ingredients—meaningful, slightly weather-defiant, full of heart and humour. It reminded me why I love this work. Not just for the light or the composition, but for the people, the connections, and the quiet honour of being trusted to tell the story of a day like this.
