Sark Snaps: Photographing La Beltane Festival
La Beltane Festival Sark
My partner and I set off from Guernsey to Sark, after being asked to photograph La Beltane Festival for the second year, a vibrant revival of an ancient Celtic tradition welcoming the arrival of summer. Staying with a friend conveniently located near The Avenue, we found ourselves just a short stroll from the festival site at the picturesque La Seigneurie Gardens.

The weekend started dramatically. Around 4 am on Friday night, an intense lightning storm shook the entire house, waking us and seemingly most of Sark. This electrifying beginning set the stage for a weekend where weather became a recurring theme, but it certainly didn't dampen our excitement or the atmosphere of the festival.

La Beltane Festival is unique to the Channel Islands, inspired by ancient Iron Age Celtic rituals celebrating Beltane, traditionally observed on May 1st. Historically, Beltane marked the midpoint between spring and summer, a time for lighting bonfires, dancing, feasting, and welcoming new growth and fertility. This modern reincarnation in Sark beautifully captures the spirit of these traditions with a joyful and community-focused celebration.

The stunning La Seigneurie Gardens were filled with vibrant activities and colourful costumes inspired by springtime, nature, and Celtic mythology. Photography-wise, the setting was idyllic: blooming flowers, intricate garlands, and cheerful attendees created perfect visual moments. Entertainment ranged from captivating sword-fighting demonstrations to engaging performances by various musicians and artists, including a slightly surreal appearance by a Skeksis from The Dark Crystal.

Midway through the festivities, the heavens dramatically opened, and everyone dashed for cover inside the marquee, quickly turning an inconvenience into joyful ceilidh dancing. When the skies eventually cleared, the celebrations continued seamlessly outdoors with their iconic rituals, burning of the Wicker Man, symbolically driving away winter spirits and welcoming summer's warmth. Another highlight was the ceremonial tree planting led by the Green Man, humorously and creatively dressed as Boba Fett, showcasing the festival's playful charm.

The following day, Sunday, provided a calmer pace. We explored the peaceful beauty of Sark, one of the smallest islands in the Channel Islands, famously car-free, and offering pristine natural landscapes. Its picturesque cliffs, secluded bays, and unspoiled countryside made for stunning photographs and a tranquil day after the excitement of the festival. We wrapped up the day helping set up for the volunteers' dinner, giving us a glimpse of the close-knit community spirit central to Sark life.

Our return to Guernsey on Monday morning was decidedly rough, the ferry battling choppy waters. However, we safely returned home, bringing with us memory cards filled with vivid moments and memories of our extraordinary weekend.
