The Lazy Landscape Photographer's Guide to Guernsey

Let me start by saying this: I am not a landscape photographer. Or at least, not the kind who wakes up at 4 a.m. to chase the perfect sunrise or spends hours waiting for a cloud to drift into the perfect position. You know the type—the ones who lug around tripods as if they’re carrying their firstborn, carefully composing shots with the precision of a brain surgeon. Nope, that’s not me.

Don’t get me wrong. I have nothing against landscape photography. In fact, every now and then, I find myself pointing my camera at a particularly stunning scene here in Guernsey. It’s almost impossible not to when you live in a place where nature regularly looks like it’s been Photoshopped by someone who really, really cares. But if I’m honest, landscape photography has always felt a little like cheating.

Why Landscape Photography Feels a Bit Like Nature's Freebie

Let’s talk about the real star here—nature. Guernsey is one of those places where you could point your camera in any direction and still come away with something worth framing. The island’s rugged cliffs, golden beaches, and lush greenery are like a professional model who doesn't even need makeup. You just show up, press the button, and voilà—instant masterpiece. It feels a bit like winning a race because you were the only one running.

When I’m photographing people, there’s a lot more at play—expressions, emotions, lighting, angles, and most importantly, the connection between the subject and the photographer. It’s a dance, and every shot is a result of that interaction. But with landscapes, it’s as if nature is doing all the heavy lifting. I just happen to be there with a camera, capturing what’s already perfect.

The Secret Spots (That Aren’t So Secret) for Lazy Landscape Photos in Guernsey

Now, before you think I’m completely downplaying the craft, I’ll admit there’s a bit more to it than just pointing and shooting. Guernsey has some iconic spots that make it easy to feel like a landscape pro, even if you’re just dabbling.

  1. The Pointe de la Moye – This western tip of the island is where you’ll find dramatic cliffs plunging into the sea, with waves crashing below like they’re auditioning for a movie trailer. Even a lazy landscape photographer like me can’t resist capturing the raw power and beauty of this place.

  2. Petit Port Beach – After a slightly exhausting (okay, really exhausting) climb down the steps, you’re rewarded with a pristine beach that looks like it was imported directly from a tropical island. Here, you can pretend you’ve discovered a secret paradise, even though everyone else with a camera has probably been here before you.

  3. Castle Cornet – For a mix of history and landscape, this medieval castle perched on a rocky outcrop offers views of St Peter Port that look like they were ripped straight from a postcard. The combination of ancient architecture and natural beauty is almost too easy to photograph well.

Why I Still Click the Shutter (Even If I’m Not That Serious About It)

So, why do I still bother with landscape photography if I think it’s a bit of a freebie? Well, for one, it’s fun. There’s a certain joy in capturing something beautiful with minimal effort. Plus, there’s something therapeutic about standing in front of a breathtaking scene and trying to capture its essence, even if nature’s doing most of the work.

And yes, I’ll admit there’s a bit of satisfaction in sharing these photos—knowing that I didn’t have to overthink the shot to get something worth looking at. Guernsey’s landscapes have a way of making even the most casual photographer feel like they’ve got some serious skills.

Closing Thoughts: Embrace the (Relative) Ease of Landscape Photography

At the end of the day, landscape photography in Guernsey has taught me that sometimes, it’s okay to let nature do the heavy lifting. It’s not about outsmarting the scenery but rather appreciating it. And if you happen to capture something stunning along the way, all the better. So, whether you’re a hardcore landscape photographer or someone who just dabbles (like me), Guernsey’s natural beauty will always be there, ready to make you look good with minimal effort.

So go ahead, check out some of my landscape photos from Guernsey below. They’re not groundbreaking, but they’re proof that even a lazy landscape photographer can capture something worth sharing in a place this beautiful. And hey, if you like what you see, feel free to snag a print or canvas. After all, nature did most of the work.
